Monica Elizabeth Jolley was an English-born author who moved to Western Australia in the late 1950s. In the photo above, the girls were about 5 and 4 years old. Check out Madelaine’s bunny slippers.

Oh, dear! Looks like me after discovering all the weeds in our garden in Maine. Yes, I had a good cry. But I’m not complaining because the weather is delicious here!
I think all gardeners look like this (inside) after weeds, biting insects, sunscreen failure, falling off the retaining wall, careless pruning chop, expensive plant death, etc.
When I was a teenager, we went to Bar Harbor, Maine, one summer, and it was amazing — especially with all the wild blueberries.
The bike and scooter are wonderful! Every time I visit your site I am entranced by the garden images you search out. They are always a visual treat.
This one is really sweet — although not for poor Madelaine. And I need to try one of Elizabeth Jolley’s novels.
Surprised to learn not every moment in every garden is blissful.
