The Kittatinny was the first of the resort hotels at Delaware Water Gap in the Poconos Mountains — opening in 1832. In its heyday in the early 20th century, it could accommodate hundreds of guests.
The hotel burned down in 1931. Some of the foundation is still visible, as well as a stream that used to run through the basement kitchen, according to a National Park Service newsletter.

That is an interesting platform the women are sitting on. As to what they’re talking about, that would make a good writing prompt.
I would like to say they are discussing poetry or women’s suffrage, but I suspect they are talking about a fourth friend/sister.
When my room mate and I used to drive from Rochester NY to visit her parents in NJ we always went through the Delaware Water Gap. Wonderful landscape and such an evocative name. She used to go hawking in the Kittatinny Mts. with a friend who worked with raptors. Have a great photo of her as a young woman on top of the mt. with a hawk on her wrist! Can’t you just imagine if such a hotel still existed. There once was a hotel like that on the Capital Square in Madison. Torn down in early 20th C.

I can well believe that there was a hotel like this in Madison. Water seems to be a key element of a Gilded Age resort.
Forgot to say that I think Tara is right. I wonder if it slides and they just push each other kind of back and forth.
